BAREFOOT COLLEGE DEVELOPING WOMEN BEEKEEPERS IN FIJI

Fiji Beekeepers Association is proud to announce collaboration with Barefoot College on a two-year project to develop the beekeeping businesses of a select few women on Vanua Levu. The project will consist of classroom and apiary training, on-site mentoring, and will provide hives and beekeeping equipment.

Chuck McCay of Cegu Valley Farm will deliver most of the project with support from other local beekeepers. Candidates for the program will participate in an introduction to beekeeping class later this month.

Barefoot College is an India-based NGO that provides solutions to problems in rural communities, with the objective of making them self-sufficient. It is a world leader in economic development and operates in 80 countries. They are best known in Fiji for their development work training women on solar power generation.

Unlike most beekeeping development projects in Fiji, one-third of this project’s budget is dedicated to training and mentoring.
